History of the FTB
The journal was published for the first time in 1963 under the title Informacije Prehrambeno-tehnološkog instituta u Zagrebu (Information from the Food Technology Institute of Zagreb). Most of the authors of the published papers were lecturers and professors at the Department of Biotechnology of the Faculty of Technology, University of Zagreb, but very soon scientists from other institutions started contributing their own scientific articles, so in 1968 the name of the journal was changed into Prehrambeno-tehnološka revija (Food Technology Review).
With time, not only scientists working in the field of food technology were handing in their papers, but a lot of manuscripts concerning topics from the field of biotechnology were submitted to the Journal, so in 1986 the Editorial Board had to rename it to Prehrambeno-tehnološka i biotehnološka revija (Food Technology and Biotechnology Review).
Because of the quality of its articles and the increasing number of authors, the Journal became the leading publication of scientists working in the field of food technology and biotechnology in our country. With Vol. 28 (1) 1990 Faculty of Food Technology and Biotechnology, University of Zagreb, became the publisher of the Journal, and since 1991 it has been partially funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Informatics, Republic of Croatia. Since 1991, the Journal has become the official publication of Croatian Society of Biotechnology, and since 1995 of Slovenian Microbiological Society.
Trying to expand the number of co-authors, especially from the neighbouring countries (Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Germany) the journal has been edited in English since 1995. From the first issue of the following year (1996) the name of the journal was changed to Food Technology and Biotechnology. This contributed to better affirmation of our scientists abroad, and a greater number of articles started coming from all over the world.
As a result, since Vol. 37 (1) 1999, the Journal has been indexed in Current Contents®/Agriculture, Biology and Environmental Sciences and other databases. This motivated the Editorial team to continue with the improvement of the quality of the Journal, which resulted in the more or less constant increase of the Impact Factor. With the growing quality of the Journal, the number of special issues dedicated to specific topics in different fields covered by the Journal, and edited by guest editors has significantly increased. As the Journal firmly believes in free dissemination of scientific research, we joined DOAJ in 2005, and in line with that supported the Croatian Open Access Declaration. The Journal constantly attempts to keep up with the latest advancements in scientific publishing by joining various organizations such as COPE, EASE and MET. We also try to implement latest technologies to further improve the quality of this publication.
